2019 Pays de l'Aude Rouge, Le Havre de Paix, Languedoc, France
2018 Merlot, La Girouette, Languedoc, France
Well we certainly can't be accused of not listening to our customers. 'I'd like a soft, juicy Merlot?' is a common question we get asked, so we went on the hunt for one and found this little gem. It's from the Languedoc in France where the sun-baked vineyards produce wonderfully ripe grapes brimming with flavour. This great example is soft textured, with jammy blackberry and juicy plum flavours and well-integrated, creamy tannins. It's smooth, supple and balanced. The 'La Girouette' label range are classic French varietals from the sunny Pays d'Oc region. 2018 Pinot Noir Reserve, La Girouette, Languedoc, France
2018 Malbec, La Forge Estate
2018 Merlot, Louis Eschenauer, Languedoc, France
There's a lot going for this very reasonably priced southern French Merlot. It's a very good example of the variety, with a good meaty texture and plenty of ripe fruit on the nose and palate. There's some lovely cherry and blackcurrant flavours and on the finish the wine has a lovely silky texture.
2018 Carignan Vieilles Vignes, La Forge Estate, Languedoc, France
Intense deep purple colour with ruby red tints. At first spices and blackberry, the second nose develops wood and cocoa aromas finishing on toasted oak notes. Full-bodied rich and mellow with velvety tannins. Complex flavours on the middle palate, liquorice flavours on the finish. Long lasting.
Jean-Claude Mas has significantly grown and enhanced Domaines Paul Mas with the acquisition of several carefully selected properties throughout the Languedoc. His portfolio of estates now accounts for over 440 acres of premium vineyards, planted with 25 different varieties, including Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier and Chardonnay. Above all else, his vineyards are maintained at the utmost quality so as to yield the highest calibre grapes.
La Forge Estate wines symbolize the fusion of the old and the new worlds of wine, as well as the fusion between carefully selected grapes from the best South of France vineyards and an expressive, round and aromatic style, brightened up by a subtle dose of oak barrel ageing.
2015 Minervois 'La Liviniere', Domaine de Tholomies, Languedoc, France
This wonderfully rich and intense red is right up there with the very best of the Languedoc. La Liviniere is one of the few vineyards in the Languedoc with 'Cru' status, and it's clear to see why with this wine. It has some vivid cherry and blackberry fruit on the palate with some immense coffee and dark chocolate notes alongside. There is some definite ageing potential, but it offers some serious drinking pleasure right now.
2020 Petit Verdot, Domaine Mas Belles Eaux, Languedoc, France
The lesser known Bordeaux variety, Petit Verdot, thrives in the slightly warmer Languedoc. It's not widely planted, and is often blended with other varieties, but Domaine Mas Belles Eaux have rightly chosen to show it off in all its magnificence.
This is a big wine with huge personality. The aroma is an alluring combination of dark fruit, violet and a hint of clove. On the palate it has a strudy backbone and rich texture. Dark fruits again dominate with a hint of cocoa in the background.
2020 Grenache/Syrah, Domaine Saint-Paul, Languedoc, France
Domaine Saint-Paul is a fabulous organic estate, located close to Béziers in the commune of Colombiers in the heart of the Languedoc. Their focus is on traditional southern French grape varieties, with a huge amount of emphasis on work carried out in the vineyard to ensure the quality of grapes harvested is absolutely first class.
This hard work has resulted in a trio of exceptional wines. We'd go as far as to say that this estate is one of our most exciting finds in recent years.
The Grenache Syrah is rich, luscious and smooth textured. The deep colour and wonderful aroma of dark fruits with a hint of liquorice suggest a richly flavoured palate to follow and it doesn't disappoint. Layers of dark fruit and spice are brought together in a beautifully textured package. There is so much wine for the money here.
