KUNYE, meaning “together” in Xhosa, is a new nonprofit wine brand that celebrates the diversity of the South African landscape. All profits generated from the KUNYE wine sales will be placed into a scholarship fund to assist people from disadvantaged backgrounds in South Africa to forge a career in the wine industry.
In the vineyard the grapes are sourced from dryland farmed grapes in the prestigious Swartland area. These conditions naturally limit the crop and produce ripe berries with high acidity. In the cellar, no oak was used. Fermentation was completed in stainless steel tanks with natural yeasts and the wine was left on the lees for as long as possible before being bottled. The 2020 vintage was a dry and healthy growing season that followed a winter with good to normal rainfall which allowed the grapes to ripen optimally. One of the best quality vintages in recent years.
The result is a Chenin that’s textured, scented with apple-skin and guava, slightly tropical yet buttressed with fresh, ripe acidity.
