Description

The Irwin Chardonnay is the flagship white from Matawhero Wines, one of New Zealand’s pioneering wineries established in Gisborne in 1975. Crafted from a single premium vineyard on the Golden Slopes of Hexton Hills, this wine reflects the region’s long, warm growing season and distinctive soils that favour concentrated flavour and balance.

Tasting Notes:
A lovely golden colour, the nose opens with rich stone fruit and melon characters, overlaid with subtle toasty oak nuances. The palate is ripe and expressive, with juicy peach, cantaloupe and melon flavours, layered with creaminess and finely integrated oak, leading to a taut yet harmonious finish supported by bright, lively acidity.

Winemaking:
Made from 100% Mendoza clone Chardonnay grown on the Tietjen vineyard, the grapes are hand‑picked and gently pressed before fermentation. The wine is fermented in a combination of American and Hungarian oak barriques, with full malolactic fermentation adding richness and depth. The wine is aged on lees for approximately 9–10 months, enhancing complexity and texture while preserving freshness.

Food Pairing:
An excellent match for seafood such as scallops or crayfish, grilled white meats, creamy pasta dishes and soft cheeses. Its balance of fruit and subtle oak also pairs beautifully with pork chops and roasted poultry.

ABV: 13.5%
