Gaëlle and Jérôme Meunier's white wines were amongst the standout wines of our recent Burgundy 2022 tastings. In terms of quality to price we don't think this Chardonnay was bettered by any other wine tasted. There is some definite Puligny Montrachet refinement here, in fact we think some of the juice is indeed declassified Puligny. There is a great fruit intensity, with hints of orange zest adding freshness and vibrancy. There is a hint of toasty oak, but discreet and very much in balance. In all this is a quite exceptional wine and one to stock up on for drinking over the next 3-4 years.
Gaëlle and Jérôme Meunier are based in the village of Barizey, 5 miles from Mercurey. They also have parcels of vines on the Côte d’Or including some excellent parcels in Puligny-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru Champ Gain. The wines are rich and easy going in style with great balance and depth of fruit. The Mercurey is light and fruity and perfect for drinking young.
