A characterful expression of Cannonau — Sardinia’s traditional name for the Grenache grape — from the Sarrabus region of south-eastern Sardinia, produced by Cantina Castiadas, a cooperative founded in 1959 to showcase the wines and traditions of this distinctive part of the island. This 100% Cannonau comes from the Capo Ferrato subzone, where vineyards close to the coast benefit from the influence of the Mediterranean and granitic soils. The result is a generous, full-bodied red with ripe fruit, savoury spice and the aromatic character of the surrounding Mediterranean landscape.
Tasting Notes:
Bright ruby in colour, with an expressive nose of ripe red berries and cherries alongside darker fruit, fragrant herbs and gentle spice. The palate is dry, rounded and full-bodied, combining generous red and black fruit with a subtle balsamic, herbal character and well-integrated tannins. Freshness keeps the wine balanced, while the fruit and savoury notes carry through to a long, warming finish.
Winemaking:
Made from 100% Cannonau grown in the Castiadas, Muravera and San Vito areas of Sarrabus, with around 80% of the vineyards situated close to the coast on soils formed from weathered granite. The grapes are destemmed and fermented for around 10 days at controlled temperature before the wine spends a year in stainless-steel tanks, followed by at least six months of bottle ageing. This approach preserves the fruit and aromatic character of the variety while allowing the wine to develop greater depth and roundness.
Food Pairing:
A natural match for roast and grilled red meats, lamb and game, as well as hearty Mediterranean dishes. Its combination of ripe fruit, savoury herbs and generous body also makes it a good partner for mature Sardinian sheep’s cheese.
