Viñedos Viejos is a pure expression of old-vine Mencía from the historic village of Valtuille de Abajo, one of Bierzo’s most respected vineyard areas. Drawn from small parcels of mature vines rooted in mixed soils of clay, sand, slate and river stones, the wine reflects both the elegance and depth for which the region is increasingly recognised. Careful vineyard work and restrained oak ageing allow the character of the fruit and site to remain at the forefront.
Tasting Notes:
Deep cherry red in colour, the nose is open and expressive, showing aromas of wild berries, cherry and blackberry, layered with gentle spice, subtle toast and a mineral, balsamic undertone. On the palate it is full yet refined, with a velvety texture, balanced acidity and ripe, finely grained tannins. The finish is persistent and precise, leaving a clear impression of fruit purity and freshness.
Vineyards & Winemaking:
The wine is produced from very old Mencía vines, typically between 50 and 90 years of age, cultivated in small plots around Valtuille de Abajo. Grapes are harvested by hand, fermented with care, and the wine is aged for around 12 months in French oak barrels to add structure and complexity without dominating the fruit.
Food Pairing:
Well suited to red meats, roast dishes and earthy flavours, particularly mushroom-based recipes.
ABV: 13.5%
