A beautifully refined Margaux from Château du Tertre, a Fifth Growth estate whose vineyards occupy one of the appellation’s notable gravelly rises. From the excellent 2016 vintage, this is a graceful and classically proportioned Bordeaux, combining ripe black fruit with the perfume, fine structure and understated complexity associated with Margaux. Now developing attractive maturity, it retains the freshness and balance to evolve further in bottle.
Tasting Notes:
Deep garnet in colour, the nose opens with cassis, black cherry and red plum before revealing more delicate notes of violet, cedar and graphite. With air, layers of tobacco leaf, pencil shavings, dried rose and subtle woodland notes begin to emerge. The palate is poised and medium to full-bodied, with fine, silky tannins and a fresh line of acidity giving definition to the ripe fruit. Savoury spice and a gentle mineral character build towards an elegant, persistent finish with lingering cedar and floral notes.
Winemaking:
Produced from the classic Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, with Cabernet Sauvignon providing the backbone and longevity of the wine. The fruit comes from Château du Tertre’s Margaux vineyards, where gravel, sand and clay contribute both finesse and structure. Careful parcel-by-parcel vinification is followed by maturation in French oak, allowing the components to integrate while developing the complexity and polished texture expected of a classified-growth Margaux.
Food Pairing:
An excellent match for roast fillet of beef, rack of lamb, duck breast and venison. It also pairs beautifully with wild mushroom dishes, beef Wellington, truffle, roast game birds and mature hard cheeses. Decanting before serving will allow its developing aromatics and elegant structure to open fully.
