Description

If there is one wine that you should try to discover the heights that the wines of Bierzo and the variety Mencia can reach, then this is it.

About the wine:
The Bodegas Peique Luis Peique 2014 is a limited-edition, aged Mencía red wine. It is Bodegas Peique's top expression of the Mencía grape, named in honour of the family patriarch, Luis Peique. The wine is made from 100% Mencía grapes sourced from very old vines, some of which are 80–90 years old. It was aged for 16 months in 500-liter French oak barrels. The winery produced only 600 bottles and 100 magnums of the 2014 vintage.

This deep coloured red offers a complex nose with fresh fruit, floral notes, and spices. The palate is full bodied and smooth, especially now that the wine has spent a decade maturing. The broad array of flavours include dark fruit, cocoa, and licorice, which lead to a long finish.

Winemaking Philosophy:
The winery, founded in 1999, is a three-generation partnership and is currently run by Luis and his wife Sagrario, along with their children Mar (General Manager), Jorge (winemaker), and another son also named Luis (viticulturalist). The Peique family cultivates 40 hectares of vines, which are spread across numerous micro-plots ranging from 0.2 to 1 hectare. The vineyards are deliberately kept in small plots to ensure quality and reflect the distinct terroir of each location. The vineyards are located at altitudes between 450 and 600m with the main grape varieties being Mencia (reds) and Godello (whites).

Food Pairing:
A big wine for big flaours and hearty dishes: Cured cheeses, red meat and game dishes in particular.

ABV: 14%
