The 2020 Pombal do Vesuvio is a distinguished Douro red from Quinta do Vesuvio, one of the region’s most historic estates with roots dating back to the 19th century. Nestled in the remote Douro Superior sub‑region, the estate’s terraced vineyards around the ancient dovecote (‘pombal’) are planted predominantly with traditional Douro varieties including Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and a touch of Tinta Amarela. Quinta do Vesuvio forms part of the renowned Symington Family Estates, carrying forward centuries of winemaking excellence.
Tasting Notes:
This wine shows an intense, deep red colour with concentrated dark fruit aromas of blackberry, plum and cassis, accompanied by subtle spice, floral nuances and hints of wild herbs. On the palate it is full‑bodied and muscular yet refined, with ripe fruit, firm but polished tannins and a long, expressive finish that carries mineral and savoury notes.
Winemaking:
The blend reflects the estate’s classic planting: predominantly Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional with a small contribution from Tinta Amarela. Grapes are sourced from terraced sites around the historic pombal, fermented to preserve intensity and structure, and matured to achieve balance and complexity typical of Vesuvio’s Douro DOC wines.
Food Pairing:
Pairs beautifully with slow‑roasted lamb, grilled game, hearty stews and mature cheeses — dishes that complement its depth of flavour and structural elegance.
ABV: 14.5%
