We are delighted to be kicking off our 2026 wine dinners with a very special evening celebrating the exceptional wines of Matawhero Estate in Gisborne, New Zealand. We will be joined by Kirsten Searle, owner of Matawhero Wines, who will introduce her wines and offer a vivid insight into this lesser-known region of New Zealand.
I have been fortunate to meet Kirsten on several occasions at various trade tastings, and I can honestly say that few people speak with such passion and knowledge about their wines as she does. I am thrilled that she has offered Baythorne Wines a prime Friday evening slot in her busy schedule during her two-week stay in the UK.
Situated on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, Gisborne is recognised as one of the country’s ‘fruit bowls’, thanks to its long, hot summers and rich, fertile plains. The extended hours of sunshine, moderated by the nearby Pacific Ocean and its cooling afternoon sea breezes, are perfect for the slow and even ripening of grapes. The result is a range of wines with weight and intensity, ripe tropical flavours, and a balanced natural acidity that ensures freshness and vibrancy.
These wines have become mainstays of our New Zealand selection, and this dinner is your opportunity to see for yourself why we hold them in such high regard. White wines take centre stage, with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Gewurztraminer all featured on the tasting list. Red wine lovers will also be well catered for, as the evening concludes with the estate’s Merlot, paired with a selection of delicious British cheeses.
Our café head chef, Jon Herring, has prepared a menu designed to showcase Kirsten’s wines at their very best.

Starter: Thai-style fish cakes with tartare sauce
Main: Chicken breast wrapped in prosciutto with a mozzarella and spinach filling, served with green beans, roasted new potatoes, and a truffle velouté
