A distinctive and beautifully crafted Somerset cider from The Somerset Cider Brandy Company, produced at the renowned Burrow Hill orchards. The Keeve – No. 1 celebrates the traditional art of keeved cider making, a slow and carefully controlled process that preserves natural apple sweetness while developing remarkable depth and complexity. Richly aromatic yet refreshing, this elegant cider combines ripe orchard fruit with gentle tannins and a wonderfully balanced finish.
Tasting Notes:
Golden amber in colour with a delicate natural sparkle, the nose is fragrant and expressive with aromas of ripe apple, baked pear and apple blossom complemented by hints of honey, dried hay and gentle spice. The palate is rounded and finely textured, offering concentrated orchard fruit and mellow natural sweetness balanced by fresh acidity and subtle cider tannins. Notes of apple skin, citrus peel and delicate earthy complexity emerge towards a long, harmonious and gently bittersweet finish.
Cider making:
Produced from traditional Somerset cider apples grown in the orchards surrounding Burrow Hill. The cider is crafted using the traditional keeving method, in which naturally occurring pectin and nutrients are separated from the fresh juice before fermentation. This slows the fermentation process, allowing some of the apples' natural sugars to remain while developing a complex, balanced and characterful cider. Careful maturation enhances the texture and harmony while preserving the distinctive freshness and aromatic qualities of the fruit.
Food Pairing:
An excellent match for roast pork, Somerset Cheddar, pork terrine and traditional ploughman's lunches. It also pairs beautifully with pâté, blue cheeses, apple-based dishes, charcuterie and lightly spiced food. Particularly enjoyable lightly chilled, allowing its delicate aromatics and natural sweetness to shine.
