History
Back in 2005, George Unwin, the founder of Baythorne Wines, accidentally embarked on a career in the wine trade. What he thought was a temporary job stacking shelves and serving customers in the shop of a Colchester wine merchants soon developed into a permanent role. Fast forward 6 years and, with a desire to move back to the farm he had grown up on, George began planning his own venture. He set his sites on a large redundant granary barn on the farm and started to sketch some ideas.
Plans were prepared and approved, building work was completed, and finally, in November 2014, George opened the doors to his beautifully restored granary. His hybrid Wine Merchants, Cookery School and Events Venue was an immediate success.
Fast forward a decade and the business has evolved considerably. The Baythorne Wines shop has moved 20 yards to the old farm Workshop, and now forms the heart of a vibrant retail and hospitality hub at Baythorne Hall. There may no longer be a cookery school at Baythorne Hall, but this has allowed George and his team more time to focus on the Wine Merchants and see it grow and thrive.
Today Baythorne Wines is one of the leading wine merchants in the region, the shop is a must-visit for any wine enthusiast, and we pack up wines daily to send to all corners of the UK.
